What is SUPARTZ?

A non-surgical, non-pharmacologic therapy for knee osteoarthritis. The goal of SUPARTZ is to supplement the poor quality hyaluronan (a natural substance in your joint cartilage and fluid) with additional, highly-purified hyaluronan. SUPARTZ therapy is an injectable solution made from highly purified sodium hyaluronate, extracted from rooster combs harvested from roosters that have been certified as suitable for human consumption via pre- and post-mortem veterinary inspection.

How does SUPARTZ work?

SUPARTZ is a short injection process.  The injection area is cleaned and then the SUPARTZ JFT is injected directly into the knee joint space. Your doctor may ask you to avoid strenuous activities for a couple of days following the injection. Most patients experience little or no discomfort during the injection. If you’re concerned about the injection, talk to the doctor about ways to reduce any mild pain that may occur. SUPARTZ treatment is usually approved for 5 weekly injections.

How do I know if SUPARTZ is right for me?

It may be right for you if your knee pain is due to osteoarthritis, you are not getting adequate pain relief from walking and/or physical therapy, and you are not getting adequate pain relief from pain medications.

Why may SUPARTZ not be right for me?

SUPARTZ may not be recommended if you are allergic to products from birds, have infections or skin disease in the area in which the injection will be given, or have had any allergic reaction to SUPARTZ or similar therapies in the past.

What are the potential adverse effects?

In clinical trials reviewed by the FDA, the most common adverse events occurring in patients treated with SUPARTZ therapy were: Joint pain with no evidence of inflammation, Joint pain with evidence of inflammation, Back pain, Injection site reaction (pain/swelling/effusion/redness/warmth) and Headache. These adverse events also occurred at similar rates in patients treated with a saltwater placebo.
